Do you know what an Isotope is?
Atoms of the same element can have different numbers of neutrons; the different possible versions are called Isotopes. If atoms don't have the right number of neutrons, they can become radioactive. Dr. Lovelace and the "Mercury 7 Astronauts" would have been familiar with Isotopes given Albuquerque 's post-World War II scientific research.
