Life in Albuquerque
Albuquerque History
Albuquerque was established as a city in 1706 by Spanish settlers. The city remained sparsely populated until 1945, when the first nuclear device was developed at nearby Los Alamos and tested in southern New Mexico. With the resulting influx of scientists, researchers and military personnel, the city grew into a major American technological center. Today, Albuquerque is New Mexico's center for finance, communications, education, transportation and medicine. To learn more, visit the City of Albuquerque web site.
