In the new Inpatient Pediatric Unit at Lovelace Westside Hospital, a parent can stay overnight in the room with his or her children.
Hospital officials think that’s a crucial element to care in a time that can create emotional trauma for the whole family.
The Inpatient Pediatric Unit opened May 1. Dr. Rebecca Webb is the Medical Director of the Inpatient Pediatric Unit. Not only is Webb pleased that hospital administrators made the unit a goal, she’s thrilled that her staff of nurses acclimated themselves so well to the community.
“The thing I like the most is the response of the parents to the unit,” Webb said. “It’s very comfortable and friendly and accommodating to everyone.”
The unit offers medical, surgical and chronic illness management to children. The unit is designed with families in mind to treat patients from infancy through adolescence. Each of the five patient rooms offers wireless Internet and popular video game playing technology.
Since 2002, more than $35 million has been invested into Westside hospital, expanding services and technology. The pediatric unit is the latest phase, said Lovelace Westside Hospital CEO Troy Greer.
