Physical therapist graduate finds experienced team and opportunity to build career at Lovelace

“I grew up in Albuquerque,” shares Lovelace Rehabilitation Hospital physical therapist, Lindsey Borders, DPT. “Lovelace has always been one of the big hospitals in town.” Though Lindsey didn’t think of Lovelace at the time as the place she would build her career helping people, the at-a-distance familiarity with the health system became more tangible while nearing graduation from the University of New Mexico’s doctoral physical therapy program. “Lovelace Rehabilitation Hospital team members spoke to our class. It sounded like a good opportunity. The team was cohesive, yet from different backgrounds.” Lindsey decided to get to know Lovelace better and submitted her application.

An on-campus interview was her first experience with Lovelace Rehabilitation Hospital. “I was very impressed with the outpatient team,” Lindsey adds. “During the interview, they wanted to know who I was and how I wanted to build my career. We talked about my goals. It was very personalized.” Following interviews, Lindsey toured the hospital, where she had an opportunity to meet and visit with more team members. “I could tell that if I had questions as a new team member, that I would be able to ask more experienced therapists or other experienced team members.”

That mattered to Lindsey, who would soon be leaving the classroom environment and taking her skills and expertise into a clinical setting to do exactly what she had wanted to do throughout the three-year doctoral program - help people. That first impression, she says, has carried through since she joined Lovelace last August. “The culture is great,” Lindsey says. “I felt that right away. Everyone watches out for each other. I’ve had a lot of questions and everyone is willing to help.”

From her experience as a new team member, Lindsey says one of her goals throughout her career is to pay it forward as a clinical instructor for upcoming physical therapy graduates. “I want them to feel comfortable in the outpatient setting,” she adds. “My goal is to have that ability to make a difference in their experience.”

Not only serving to shape future team member’s experience, Lindsey says her career at Lovelace has awarded her the opportunity to grow and learn. “Lovelace wants physical therapists to be great people, as well as great therapists,” she explains. “I’m glad I joined Lovelace, because of the support I’ve received from other therapists, but also for the time off for continuing education classes to make my career better. Being a therapist at Lovelace is the most gratifying career.”
