Preventing Heart Attacks in Women/Day of Dance

You might think if you were having a heart attack, you'd know it. But, that's not always the case, especially for women.

We talked to one woman who knew she wasn't feeling good, but had no idea how serious it was.
"I would have bet an entire year's paycheck that I was not having a heart event at all," said Lydia Koch. In fact, she thought it was the flu.

"My shoulder was kind of stiff. Then my throat started to get sore and I started to get a little sick to my stomach."

Abraham Lichtmacher, MD, has been named chief of women's services for Albuquerque, N.M.-based Lovelace Health System, effective mid-May.

Dr. Lichtmacher most recently served as chief of obstetrics and gynecology at Rochester (N.Y.) General Health System. However, he was previously with Lovelace Health System and ABQ Health Partners as chief of the medical staff for Lovelace Women's Hospital and chairman for women's health.

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - With February being Heart Health Month, cardiologists say it's a good time to remind people that they should pay attention to all possible symptoms if they feel they're going through a heart attack.

"You only have several minutes to hours before getting to the hospital where you have time to actually open an artery up to preserve the heart function," says Dr. Brendan Cavanaugh, Cardiologist with the New Mexico Heart Institute in Albuquerque.

Lovelace Westside Hospital in Albuquerque, N.M., has announced that it will add a pediatric area to its emergency department.

As part of renovations to its emergency department, the hospital will dedicate four private exam rooms to children and their families.
