There's many reasons why Adam Alvarez chose Josh Groban's "You Raise Me Up" to sing to his mother on Sunday. In many ways, Alvarez said he is raising himself up from tragedy.

Alvarez devoted two songs to his mother, Delia Alvarez, during an intimate performance at the chapel of Lovelace Women's Hospital, where Ms. Alvarez is a patient.

It has been two weeks since Alvarez, the choir director at St. Jude Thaddeus Church has performed in front of an audience.

"I'm still anxious about returning," Alvarez said.

But on Sunday, he belted two songs in front of his family members, in honor of his mother, who was inside the church during the time of the incident and witnessed helplessly as a man stabbed her son repeatedly.

"I had a gift that I could give my mother, even though it got taken away from me for a little while. I’m so happy that it came back and that I was able to give it to her and I love you mom," said Alvarez.

Ms. Alvarez, who is recovering from colon cancer, watched tearfully as her son sang to her.

"I said, 'Dear Lord, do I deserve this?'  Because I don’t think I deserve the so much, so much that’s been given to me," said Ms. Alvarez.  "I don’t know why this happened to him. Only the Lord knows, but he’ll get over it, and I will too."
