Lovelace Medical Group today will celebrate the opening of its expanded pulmonary services clinic at its Downtown Lovelace Medical Center campus.

The 5,000-square-foot clinic will offer outpatient services and will be staffed by four doctors. The expansion will help Lovelace providers meet the growing need for pulmonary services and provide speedier care for those patients, said LMG CEO Dr. John Cruickshank.

“What we have found in the past one-and-a-half years is that doctors have been coming to us saying it was difficult to obtain pulmonary consultations for their patients, and so we have worked on a strategy to provide better access for patients with chronic respiratory complaints,” Cruickshank said.

Lovelace had previously offered pulmonary services, but its lone pulmonologist was booked for three months, Cruickshank said. “Now we can get patients in within the same week, which is pretty amazing. Before it took several weeks to several months.”

The clinic at Lovelace Medical Towers, 500 Walter St. NE, will have two new pulmonary function diagnostic machines, and its doctors will also serve patients at Lovelace Medical Center, the Heart Hospital of New Mexico at Lovelace Medical Center and Lovelace Westside Hospital. The westside hospital will also have a pulmonary function machine, Cruickshank said.

Lovelace has been expanding its medical group in the past two years in an effort to meet the increased access and care demands brought on by the Affordable Care Act and Medicaid expansion.

“More patients are coming on, and they are going to be accessing the system,” Cruickshank said. “If we don’t provide the added access they are going to have a hard time.”
