Southwest Medical Associates (SWMA) has hired three new staff members. They are: Susan Simon, R.N., CNM, certified nurse midwife. Simon has 30 years’ experience in nursing and 14 years’ experience in nurse midwifery. She previously ran a gynecology and homebirth consulting business; worked for the New Mexico Department of Health; as a nurse for Albuquerque Public Schools; and as a at Fort Defiance Indian Hospital. Simon has a bachelor’s degree from UNM; a degree in nursing from the University of Albuquerque; and earned certification in nurse midwifery from the Frontier School of Midwifery in Hyden, Ky. She is a member of the American College of Nurse Midwives. Aaron Pfau, D.O., family practice physician. Pfau has a bachelor’s degree in molecular and cellular biology from the University of Arizona in Tucson; a doctorate of osteopathic medicine from Northwestern University in Glendale, Ariz.; and completed a residency in family medicine at Southern New Mexico Family Medicine in Las Cruces. He is a member of the American Osteopathic Association; American Academy of Physicians; and the New Mexico Medical Society. Michael Smith, M.D., OB-GYN physician. Smith has 30 years’ experience and previously practiced in obstetrics and gynecology for eight years at the First Step Women’s Center in Las Cruces; and worked in private practice for 22 years. He has a medical degree from Louisiana State University; and completed a residency and internship in OB-GYN at the Orlando Regional Medical Center in Orlando, Fla. Smith is board certified by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
