Up until recently, New Mexico women had limited options for breast reconstruction, forcing some doctors to send their patients out of state.  Now, a partnership between Lovelace Women's Hospital and two local surgeons is opening doors for breast cancer patients. Heather Mills reports.

"You never think that word is going to be associated with your name. It's not going to happen to me," said Rita Erickson. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in July of 2011. A month later, she had a mastectomy, and simultaneously, received an implant.

Martinez makes her appointments to health insurance exchange board

Gov. Susana Martinez on Thursday made her six appointments to the New Mexico Health Insurance Exchange board of directors.

The appointments include New Mexico Human Services Department Secretary Sidonie Squier and Ben Slocum, president and CEO of Lovelace Health Plan, Martinez’s office said.

The board, which is charged with building the state’s insurance exchange, will hold its first meeting in Albuquerque on April 29 and 30.

Lovelace Health System President and CEO Ron Stern said that the new Rio Rancho clinic will offer a patient-centered medical home model where four primary care doctors will coordinate all of a patient's care.

At Lovelace Health System’s hospitals they cuddle babies, deliver beverages to patients’ rooms, work the information desks and provide spiritual guidance to patients.

At Presbyterian Healthcare Services’ hospitals they play music and sing to patients, sew pillows, staff the gift shops and help out in the emergency rooms.

They are volunteers, and they provide valuable services to patients and free up clinical staff to practice medicine.

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - Gov. Susana Martinez has named medical care, insurance and business officials to the governing board of New Mexico's state-run health insurance exchange, which must be quickly implemented in the new few months.

The exchange is to serve as a marketplace for the uninsured to buy medical coverage.

Martinez on Thursday announced six appointees to the exchange's board of directors. They join six members named by legislators.

Defibrillators Distributed to State Police

State Police now have a new device to help save lives. More than 72 defibrillators were given to officers today. State police say in the near future an additional 80 Units will have the heart saving devices. Earlier this month Lovelace Medical Center and the Heart Hospital of New Mexico Foundation donated $15,000 to the New Mexico State Police to purchase automated defibrillators. They say heart attack victims living in rural areas have a decreased mortality rate with the devices.
