A problem with any part of the heart's electrical system can cause irregular heartbeats called arrhythmias (ah-RITH-me-ahs). During an arrhythmia, the heart can beat too fast, too slow, or with an irregular rhythm. Faulty electrical signaling in the heart causes arrhythmias.
Our electrophysiologists – cardiologists who have special education and training to treat abnormal heart rhythms – provide state-of-the art arrhythmia care to patients within and outside our community. The broad scope of services we provide for rhythm disorders includes not only simple ablation such as supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) and atrial flutter, but also complex ablations including atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia.
Ablation procedures to cure cardiac rhythms use a robotic technology called Stereotaxis, which enhances both safety and effectiveness for the patient. HHNM is a training center for other electrophysiologists from around the world to come and learn to use this robotic remote ablation technology. Using this technology, HHNM physicians have performed several procedures that were firsts for New Mexico. Our physicians have also been able to treat heart rhythm disorders that were previously untreatable.
Our surgeons perform the most atrial fibrillation and left atrial ablation procedures in the state. This expertise has led HHNM to become a referral center for patients who have failed medical and invasive therapies at other centers.
A-Fib Ablation is a procedure during which the part of a heart that generates abnormal rhythms is treated so that it is electrically disconnected from the left atrium. As a result, the abnormal electrical signals cannot reach the rest of the heart to trigger arrhythmias.
Another way to treat irregular heartbeats is with implants (pacemakers) use electrical pulses or shocks to help control life-threatening, irregular heartbeats.

As many as 20 percent of patients with defibrillators can expect a lead malfunction within 10 years of receiving their device, according to the American Heart Association.
From time to time, the lead wires that connect a patient's pacemaker or defibrillator to his heart need to be removed or replaced. Because scar tissue can bind the leads in several places along its length, specialized tools are needed to complete the removal process.
Safe, minimally invasive extraction of broken, infected pacing and defibrillator leads can be performed at the Heart Hospital with laser extraction sheath, expert operators and cardiac surgery backup.
