More than 20 million Americans – about 1 in 9 adults – have chronic kidney disease. Up to two-thirds of cases of kidney disease are caused by uncontrolled diabetes and high blood pressure. If kidney disease worsens and your glomerular filtration rate (GFR) falls below 30, dialysis may be necessary as a treatment for kidney failure. For patients with chronic kidney disease and kidney failure, we prepare patients for pre- and post-transplant operations as well as provide care for in-stage renal patients.
Dialysis is a medical treatment that removes wastes and extra fluid from the blood that the kidneys are no longer capable of removing. Two types of dialysis are available: Hemodialysis cleans your blood by taking it outside the body. Peritoneal dialysis can be done inside the body.
A diagnosis of chronic kidney disease means changes in lifestyle that may be difficult to face. The dialysis team at Lovelace provides sensitive care, education and support for patients undergoing dialysis for kidney failure. |
