Do you know what an Isotope is?
Atoms of the same element can have different numbers of neutrons; the different possible versions are called Isotopes. If atoms don't have the right number of neutrons, they can become radioactive. Dr. Lovelace and the "Mercury 7 Astronauts" would have been familiar with Isotopes given Albuquerque 's post-World War II scientific research.
Pathology

Lovelace Pathology offers plasma, platelet and red blood cell transfusions by physician order. Blood used for transfusions is supplied by United Blood Services (UBS), a nonprofit community organization that provides New Mexico with blood products. Because voluntary unpaid donors are the primary source of the blood we use for transfusion, we do not charge a fee for the blood itself. However, there is a fee for collecting, testing, processing and distributing the blood.

Only healthy people who do not have risk factors are allowed to donate. All donated blood is tested for hepatitis, HIV, syphilis and HTLV-1 and HTLV-2. Blood that tests positive for any of these infections is destroyed. Donated blood is also typed to ensure that our patients receive the blood type they need. As a result of this screening and testing, the blood supply is very safe.
