Flu season is here and it’s time to think about getting that flu shot. Stuart Dyson visited Lovelace where they’re talking vaccine.
Stuart: There’s plenty of flu vaccine ready to go all over New Mexico, 85 million distributed nationwide already. The question is who needs a flu shot? The answer is you do.
Dr. Iacuone: “Everybody needs to get the vaccine.” John Iacuone is with Lovelace Health Plan. “Say I’m a young man, 30 years old, or I’m a college student and I don’t want to mess with the flu shot, well you need to mess with it because if you don’t you could make your father sick, your grandfather sick, or a young infant sick.” New Mexicans didn’t exactly turn out in record numbers for the first drive up flu shot clinic at UNM Hospital. So far no confirmed cases of the flu here, just over 300 across the nation with one death in Ohio. Flu season is off to a mild start but don’t count on that staying that way. John Iacuone “You can ever say I’m not going to worry about it because it’s just a light flu year because you really never know when it’s going to be a robust flu season and so it’s best to be prepared.” Those of us who have been around a while need the vaccine the most, 90 percent of flu deaths are in people over the age of 65.
