Gov. Susana Martinez on Thursday made her six appointments to the New Mexico Health Insurance Exchange board of directors.

The appointments include New Mexico Human Services Department Secretary Sidonie Squier and Ben Slocum, president and CEO of Lovelace Health Plan, Martinez’s office said.

The board, which is charged with building the state’s insurance exchange, will hold its first meeting in Albuquerque on April 29 and 30.

Martinez’s other appointees were:

• Terriane Everhart of Las Cruces, the owner of Property Consultants – Real Estate & Marketing.
• Dr. James Damron, staff radiologist in the Department of Radiology at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. Damron lives in Santa Fe and has been practicing medicine for more than 38 years. He is also a board member of the New Mexico Health Insurance Alliance.
• Gabriel Para, staff attorney at Presbyterian Healthcare Services.
• Dr. J. Deane Waldman, a professor of pediatrics at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center.

Martinez signed legislation creating the health insurance exchange in March. The law took effect immediately.

“For over 18 months, we have been working to design, build and implement a health insurance exchange that meets the unique needs of New Mexicans,” Martinez said. “This legislation builds on those efforts, which had already received conditional approval from the Obama administration, and represents a tremendous amount of hard work and compromise shared by my administration, the legislature, advocates and the health care industry.”
