Lovelace Partners with the Jason Foundation to bring suicide awareness and prevention programs to schools, community groups free of charge

ALBUQUERQUE (March 14) – Youth suicide is a growing epidemic in communities across the country. New Mexico consistently ranks among the top five states in the United States for its suicide rate, which is 1.5 to 2 times the national average.

To increase education and awareness about this epidemic, Lovelace Health System has joined forces with The Jason Foundation, Inc. (JFI), a nationally recognized leader in youth suicide awareness and prevention programs.  Through Lovelace’s support of the Jason Foundation, youth suicide awareness, training and educational materials are available to teachers, coaches, parents, churches and other community groups free of charge. Training and educational materials available include:

  • A Professional Development Training Program for educators that can be presented online or via DVD. In-service training for larger groups with a suicide educator can also be arranged.

  • The Parent Resource Program is a web-based application to educate parents on the topic while providing them with tips and tools needed to talk to their kids.

  • A Promise for Tomorrow is an evidence-based curriculum unit on youth suicide prevention taught through positive peer support for students in grades 7-12.

  • The B1 Project for students is a collaborative effort with country music band Rascal Flatts. Visit www.rascalflattsb1.com to learn more.

  • A Friend Asks is a free smart phone app that offers students information, tools, and resources to help a friend who may be struggling.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide is the second-leading cause of death for youth between the ages of 10 and 24, resulting in approximately 4,800 lives lost each year. Individuals or groups can access these training sessions and educational materials at www.lovelace.com under Community Education or call 505-727-5503.
