Dr. Sharon Phelan, medical director for labor and delivery at the University of New Mexico Hospital, also a professor of obstetrics and gynecology and a fellow in the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, says the cesarean section rate at the hospital, 21 or 22 percent, is slightly less than the state’s average. The rate of c-section for the first pregnancy or primary c-section is about 11 percent, she says.
Ellen Geske didn’t want her second daughter delivered by cesarean section, but a couple of issues in her pregnancy were making that a possibility.
Her baby was breech, meaning her head was up instead of down.

Lovelace Westside Hospital has been named one of the safest hospitals in the U.S. by Consumer Reports magazine.
The 80-bed hospital received a safety score of 73 out of a possible 100 and was 14th on Consumer Reports’ list of the nation’s safest hospitals. The magazine reviewed about 4,000 hospitals.
Dr. Eldie Cruz from Lovelace Medical Group was recently on KASA This Morning to discuss needlescopic surgery.
The new cath lab is just one example of the commitment to Roswell by Lovelace Regional Hospital, says CEO Dawn Tschabrun. The new cardiac catheterization laboratory held a grand opening on Tuesday, the facility is about six weeks old, Tschabrun said.
The cath lab is built with state-of-the-art technology that will allow providers to treat a variety of patients with cardiovascular and vascular conditions with minimally invasive surgical procedures.

KRQE came out to the Lovelace Volunteer Awards celebration. They interviewed long-time Lovelace Westside Hospital volunteer Audrey Stern who has volunteered more than 11,000 hours.

The hospital at Golf Course and McMahon NW received 73 points out of a possible 100 based on the most recent data available from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. The data related to mortality, readmission, scanning, infections and communication about medications and discharge plans.
Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta, Maine, received the highest safety score at 78. Nine hospitals in the top 15 had a score of 73.
